Noted Psychologist Albert Bandura says that fortuity can have a significant impact on behavior and that who we meet can spark much personal development in the midst of life circumstances. On that note, Erik Bean first met LauraAnn Migliore in 2015 at an academic gathering in the Detroit area.
LauraAnn, fascinated with the leadership style of Theodore Roosevelt (TR) was well versed in his "prudent" message for many years having read numerous TR biographies, books, and compendiums. Erik, an avid life-long learner (Leadership Perspectives Section Editor, Journal of Leadership Studies, John Wiley & Sons) and fellow researcher, had been presenting on the connection between mindfulness, yoga, and the research process. The two began a scholarly journey in July 2017 with a collaborative workshop dubbed, Turning Your Research Vision into Scholarship at Knowledge Without Boundaries (KWB) Annual Symposium, Tempe, AZ. University of Phoenix.
To provide participants with a leadership development opportunity to apply the Work of Leaders – Vision, Alignment, and Execution (VAE) process model (Straw, Scullard, Kukkonen, & David, 2013) for turning research ideas into scholarship.
In their 2nd TR focused scholarly output at the 2018 International Leadership Association 20th Anniversary Global Conference they sampled ILA participants on Prudence as a construct via a qualitative approach to explore the deeper meaning of Theodore Roosevelt’s quote, “Do what you can with what you have and where you are at.” Their conceptual work was entitled, Prudence As a Construct to Embody Leadership for Peace and Prosperity,
Starting with Ability and Willingness as the broadest based and logical referents to take appropriate action to achieve performance, the researcher(s), explored specific areas of physical, financial, cognitive/intelligence, affective/ emotional, self-efficacy, spiritual values/ethos, and lifestyle to determine what referents best construct Prudence.
Both LauraAnn and Erik utilized mindfulness and
self-reflection / meditation techniques
